Moving with Kids and Pets in Columbus or Springfield: How to Keep Everyone Calm

The Tote Guy · October 2, 2026

Moving is a big deal for grown-ups. For kids and pets, it can feel like the whole world just got packed into bins. The good news is that a little planning makes the change feel a lot less scary for everyone, including you.

If you're moving with little ones, teenagers, a dog, a cat or all of the above anywhere around Columbus or Springfield, here are some practical ways to keep the household calm while the packing happens around them.

Talk about the move early and often

Kids handle change better when it isn't a surprise. Once your plans are firm, tell them what's happening and when, in words that fit their age.

  • Little kids do well with simple, concrete details: "We're moving to a new house with a yard. Your bed is coming with us."
  • School-age kids usually want to know about school, friends and their room. If you can, drive past the new place or the new school together.
  • Teens often want a say. Let them help plan their own room and pack their own things.

Keep talking as the move gets closer. A quick "here's what's happening this week" at dinner goes a long way.

Give kids a job (and their own totes)

Kids feel more in control when they have a role. Hand each child a few totes that are theirs to fill. Let them decorate a label with their name and a drawing, and let them decide what goes in.

  • Have younger kids pack stuffed animals, books and toys they won't miss for a few days.
  • Let older kids pack their own clothes, games and room décor.
  • Make the lid-closing part of the fun. Our totes have attached flip-top lids, so there's no tape gun for small hands to get hold of.

When you unpack, those same totes go straight to their new room. Seeing their own stuff come out first helps a new space feel like home faster.

Pack a "keep out" tote for each kid

Some things should never get packed until the very last minute: the favorite blanket, the bedtime book, the nightlight, the tablet and charger, a couple of favorite toys. Put them in a tote that stays with you, not on the truck. Bedtime on the first night will be a lot easier.

Keep routines as normal as you can

Packing tends to take over the house, but kids do best when the basics stay the same.

  • Keep meals, naps and bedtimes on schedule as much as possible.
  • Pack one room at a time so the whole house isn't torn apart at once.
  • Leave kids' rooms for close to the end so they have a familiar spot to retreat to.

With a 14-day rental, you don't have to cram everything into one frantic weekend. You can pack a little each day and keep family life moving.

Plan for pets before moving day

Pets notice when furniture moves and their favorite spots disappear. A few steps can keep them comfortable and safe.

  • Keep their things out until last. Food, bowls, leash, litter box, bed and favorite toys should be the last items packed and the first unpacked.
  • Pack a pet tote. Fill one tote with food, treats, medications, waste bags, a towel, cleaning supplies and any paperwork. Keep it with you.
  • Update their tags and microchip info with your new address and phone number before the move.
  • Keep them in their routine. Walks and feeding times at the usual hour help a lot.

Give kids and pets a safe spot on moving day

Moving day is busy. Doors are propped open, people are carrying things and stacks of totes are rolling past on the dolly. That's not a great place for a toddler or a curious dog.

  • Ask a friend, grandparent or sitter to watch young kids for the day if you can.
  • Set up a quiet room with the door closed for pets, with water, their bed and a sign on the door that says "Pet inside, keep closed."
  • If a closed room won't work, consider daycare or a trusted friend's house for the busiest hours.

Once the truck is unloaded, bring everyone over and let them explore.

Help the new place feel like home

The first few days in a new home are when kids and pets settle in.

  • Set up kids' rooms first, ideally the same day. Familiar bedding and toys make the first night easier.
  • Put pet food, water and beds in a spot that will stay the same.
  • Walk the new neighborhood together. Find the closest park, the best walking route and the nearest ice cream stop.
  • Keep cats indoors for a while until they're comfortable with the new space.

Why totes help with a family move

Packing with kids underfoot is easier when you're not wrestling with cardboard, tape and box cutters. Our totes arrive clean, ready to pack, with lids attached and a dolly included. They stack neatly, so packed rooms stay walkable, and closed lids keep packed toys and treats out of sight until the new house.

We keep the packages simple, and every one includes free delivery and pickup and a 14-day rental:

  • Small, $99: 20 totes + 1 dolly
  • Standard, $149: 40 totes + 1 dolly
  • Large, $199: 60 totes + 2 dollies

When you're unpacked, just text us and we'll schedule pickup.
